The German Karl Otto Lagerfeld, after winning a contest sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat, began working at the Pierre Balmain house. Years later he worked as a freelance designer for Fendi, Chanel and Chloé. While working for other firms, in the 1980s he created his own brand with which he launched Lagerfeld clothing and perfume collections.
