PAUL SMITH came into the world of fashion by chance. He always wanted to be a cyclist, but an accident at the age of 16 cut short his dream. During his recovery, he used to frequent a bar for intellectuals, where they talked about art and contemporary artists, they also listened to the Rolling Stones and Miles Davis. It was then that he decided that he wanted to be part of that world in some way. In 1970, with the encouragement of his girlfriend Pauline Denyer, he opened his first store in his native Nottingham. At night she went to dressmaking classes to learn the techniques and in 1976 she presented her first collection in Paris under her name. He became the quintessential British designer and today has more than 12 collections.
