Pierre Balmain grew up in the Savoy region of France at the turn of the 20th century. In 1933 he moved to Paris to study architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but the following year he dropped out to learn the art of couture at the Molyneux fashion studio. In the 50s he opened a workshop in New York where he became a prestigious haute couture designer.
