HMB (beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate) is an amino acid derived from the metabolization of leucine , part of a normal dietary protein.

HMB can also be found in various foods such as catfish, alfalfa, and is a component of breast milk but is not normally found in a normal diet.

HMB was discovered in the 1950s and has been studied for decades but only became popular as a sports supplement around 1995.

HMB has been shown to slow the breakdown of cellular protein and in turn promote tissue growth, which means it has anti-catabolic qualities. Previous studies have shown that HMB supplements also lower cholesterol levels and strengthen the immune system .
