Betaine has the special ability to break down homocysteine. Homocysteine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid, meaning it cannot be used to form vital proteins. On the contrary: homocysteine can even cause a lot of damage in our human body.
If there is too much of it in our body, it can affect the blood vessels and thus lead to cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, high homocysteine levels can contribute to conditions such as depression, dementia, eclampsia, neural tube defects, and macular degeneration. Therefore, it is even more important to keep the blood homocysteine level as low as possible.
Betaine TMG can counteract this. Since homocysteine is formed from the essential amino acid methionine, it can be converted back to methionine by methylation. For this a methyl group is required. This is exactly what Betaine can provide.
In addition to lowering the homocysteine value, betaine can also influence various metabolic processes. Animal studies have shown that taking betaine can ease digestive problems. In experiments, betaine intake caused an increase in the activity of the digestive enzymes amylase, lipase, trypsin, and chymotrypsin, leading to this effect (1). In one study, betaine was able to successfully assist the liver in processing fats (2).
Betaine TMG is also not without interest for athletes. Several studies show that taking betaine reduces the depletion of energy stores and promotes increased performance and muscle mass building (3).
