What is CLA?

CLA is an abbreviation that stands for conjugated linoleic acid ( CLA ). CLA is a natural fatty acid that is part of our diet. It is not essential, since we are able to produce it in small amounts in the liver. CLA is produced from LA ( linoleic acid ) by a change in its chemical structure, resulting in a unique fatty acid with clinically proven health benefits.

CLA in the diet.

CLA is produced naturally by ruminants (livestock) therefore it is present in whole milk, beef and dairy products. CLA levels in milk have been shown to increase when cattle are fed grass, rather than grain. Therefore, it is believed that CLA levels in feeds were much higher in the past, when cattle were primarily grass-fed.

The results suggest that CLA intake ranges from 160 – 430 mg per day. This variation depends on different factors such as diet (mainly), age and sex of the individual. Studies in both animals and humans have shown that increasing CLA intake through the diet also increases CLA levels in body tissues.
