Protein is an essential nutrient needed in the daily diet and can be found in foods such as meat, fish, eggs, milk, and nuts. It plays a role in maintaining muscle mass as well as contributing to muscle growth. Athletes have a higher need for protein intake, thus the recommended protein intake for them is 1.2-1.7 g per kg of body weight per day. This protein intake should be spread evenly between meals throughout the day. Physical exercise, and in particular strength training, leads to an increase in protein breakdown and synthesis. When reducing protein breakdown as a consequence of resistance exercise, it is important that you consume enough protein to stimulate muscle protein synthesis as this will be the foundation for muscle growth. Research has shown that consuming 20 g of protein after a workout is sufficient to stimulate maximum muscle protein synthesis (Philips 2012) 1 and therefore may contribute to muscle growth.
