In 1820 a respected French perfumer ventured to run a prestigious perfumery on Bond Street in London. His success was such that in 1834 he decided to open his own perfumery with his 14-year-old son and apprentice Eugène Rimmel, and thus the house of Rimmel was born. As the business grew and prospered so did the talent of Eugène who at the age of 24 was already an expert perfumer and a visionary in the field of cosmetics. He liked to experiment with fragrances and colors and traveled around the world looking for new, exotic, different ingredients and new inspirations. He became a pioneer in personal hygiene, creating products such as mouthwashes or scented ointments. Eugène himself realized the importance and potential that advertising represented for his brand and began to distribute illustrated catalogs of orders that could be made by mail and advertised in theater programs.
