In 1914, Dr. Francis J. Townsend formulated a solution that he called Townsend R22 to repair sunburned skin. Such was the success of the ointment that it not only restored the damage caused by the sun, but also completely cured eczema. Along with other doctors, Townsend improved the formula and it was renamed Noxzema (which came from non-eczema). In the 1920s, the NOXZEMA brand was established in Baltimore, which gradually introduced a variety of facial products. In the 40s it became a very popular brand, thanks to radio advertising and since then it has not stopped reaping success. In 1989 it became part of the Procter & Gamble group and in 2010 Alberto-Culver acquired it for Unilever.
